A rapid development of various fields of cardiovascular surgery has been achieved for the last 20 years. Two special aspects of vascular diseases in Japan are recognized, 1) diseases similar to other countries, such as occlusive and dilated lesions of arteriosclerosis which are now increasing, and 2) special diseases frequently occurred in Japan, such as angitis, thromboangitis obliterans, and aortitis syndrome which are unknown cause and are difficult to treat.
Present problembs about aneurysm of the aorta, dissecting aneurysm, various acute and chronic arterial occlusive diseases and occlusion of the great vein have been discussed. In order to achieve further development, the most important problems should be improvement in early diagnosis, early treatment, tight cooperation with medicine and surgery, and development of ideal vascular prosthesis.
