Since 1963, 35 infants have undergone treatment for esophageal atresia with or without tracheoesophageal fistula at Niigata University Hospital, consisting of 2 Gross A, 31 Gross C, 2 Gross E.
In 35 infants studied, there were 18 infants with associated anomalies (51%), 15 infants with preoperative respiratory complications (47%) and 8 infants with low birth weight (23%).
There were 11 deaths in the 35 infants, a mortality of 31%.
To evaluate the improvement in our results, we divided our patients into two time piriods; 1963-1971, 1971-1978. The late survival has improved during each of the two time periods from 50% to 84%.
Gastrostomy prior to a primary anastomosis seems to be one of important factors improving the clinical prognosis of patients with esophageal atresia.
