INTRACARDIAC REPAIR OF TETRALOGY OF FALLOT FOLLOWING BLALOCK-TAUSSIG ANOASTOMOSIS

From June, 1973 to April, 1979, 59 intracardiac repairs of tetralogy of Fallot were performed with 8 deaths (a mortality rate of 13.6%). Among these 59, in 40, primary intracardiac repair was performed with 7 deaths (17.5%) and in 19, intracardiac repair following Blalock-Taussig anastomosis was performed with 1 death (5.3%).
The operative procedures in 2 cases of intracardiac repair following Blalock-Taussig anastomosis were shown by motion picture.
In infants and young children with marked polycythemia (RBC > 700×104, bilateral uneven pulmonary blood flow on scintigram and/or peripheral pulmonary arterial stenosis on angiocardiogram, the two-stage intracardiac repair following Blalock-Taussig anastomosis is mandatory.
