RESULTS OF BRONCHOPLASTIC PROCEDURES FOR LUNG CANCER

Department of Surgery, National Cancer Center Hospital

Tsuguo Naruke

Thirty-five cases of bronchoplastic procedures for lung cancer have been performed from September, 1965 to April, 1979 in the National Cancer Center Hospital, Tokyo.
The clinical stages of disease were as follows: 10 cases of Stage I disease, 8 cases of Stage II disease, and 17 cases of Stage III carcinoma.
Relative survival rates for all 35 cases indicates 48.6 per cent survival at 5 years. Survival at 5 years for 28 patients with squamous cell carcinoma is 50.2 per cent.
Preoperative bronchial artery infusion of Mitomycin C seems to be benefit to prevent recurrence as well as increase in survival.
The bronchoplastic procedures are free from the risks and dangers accompanying the operation, reducing the postoperative mortality to nil. For the prevention of postoperative complications, careful attention and effort are given in suture technique, and postoperative bronchoscopic suctioning of intrabronchial secretions is absolutely necessary.
The bronchoplastic procedures assure good postoperational life and advancement in survival rate by their pulmonary function preservation, enhancement of curability and of operative indication enlargement, thus warranting high evaluation of the operation.
