During the past 5 years, we have been using the stapling for 53 patients (esophageal carcinoma 13, gasteic cancer 20, rectal cancer 8, esophageal varices 12).
The over-all incidence of anastomotic dehiscence in the 53 patients given stapled anastomoses were 4 of 53 patients (7.5%) as compared with 22 of 241 patients (9.1 %) in whom anastomoses were hand suteures. The difference was not significant statistically. Four patients who had dehiscence of staple line were naturally cured of within one month―two recognisable clinically and the other two quite subclinical, being detectable only rentgenographically.
In this paper, a 24-year-old man is presented, who admitted to the our hospital after ingesting approximately 200 ml of strong alkalies solution. At the laparatomy the entire stomach showed atrophic status and mucosal surface was grayish red. After total gastrectomy the stapling instruments (STPU, YO-60) were available for performing transverse colon interposition. The postoperative course was uneventful.
