A THERAPEUTIC METHOD FOR PATIENTS WITH POSTGASTRECTOMY OSTEOMALACIA AND OSTEOPOROSIS

While undertaking a survey on patients with postgastrectomy osteomalacia who were gastrectomised for gastoduodenal ulcers, we have come to a conclusion that the duodenum and upper part of the jejunum are an important portion for calcium absorption.
We would like to emphasize, therefore, that a physiologic anastomosis, Billroth I type procedure if possible, should be employed in gastrectomy. Our recent experience of treatment for 3 patients with osteomalacia and esteoporosis who were gastrectomised for cancer is reported. These patients presented in teresting disorders such as pellagra-psychosis, lumbago and ischialgia several years after operation. We administered to them digestant preparations along with vitamin D, and their clinical courses have been thereafter uneventful.
