From August in 1975 to March in 1978, 228 patients were treated by gastric resection for gastric cancer and 94 of them (41.2%) underwent a total gastrectomy in our surgical clinic. The modified Plenk's method was mainly used in the reconstructive procedure for alimentary tract after the total gastrectomy. Thirty-nine patients who underwent a total gastrectomy and reconstructed by Plenk's method, were studied on reflux esophagitis using endoscopy and histological examination of biopsy specimens. Mild subjective symptoms were observed in 19 of 39 (48.7%) patients, moderate and severe cases were in 6 of 39 (15.4%) patients. In several cases, subjective symptoms did not correspond with objective findings such as endoscopic finding and/or histological findings.
However, Plenk's method was thought to be useful for the reconstructive procedure on the standpoints of simplicity, safety and radicality for cancer.
