The serum sialic acid in maligant diseases of gastrointestinal tract including gastric cancer and also benign digestive disease was measured by thiobarbituric acid assay due to Warren's method. The levels of sialic acid in serum were analysed with histopatholgoical findings. The following results were obtained.
(1) Serum sialic acid levels were increased in all patients with gastric cancer and other maligant diseases of digestive organs.
(2) Serum sialic acid levels of gastric cancer patints were increased in progressive stages of advanced gastric cancer.
(3) In stage II and III of advanced gastric cancer, s-factor was related to serum sialic acid levels, and in cases of stage IV, P-factor was related to it.
(4) In all cases of gastric cancer, the diameter of tumors and the degree of invasion to gastric wall were related to the levels of serum sialic acid.
(5) After the resection of gastric cancer, serum sialic acid levels were decreased.
(6) From above mentioned results, it was assumed that serum sialic acid levels were related to total mass of the tumor.
(7) The measurement of serum sialic acid is useful for the evaluation of stages of gastric cancer and for diagnosis of the recurrence of after surgical operation.
