Utilizing the presence of disaccharidase which is considered to appear with intestinal metaplasia of the gastric mucosa, the color discriminant area of disaccharidase, tumor area and total area of the resected stomach of gastric cancer were determined by a planimeter using the "Tes-Tape" method and furthermore the periphery of the tumor and the color discriminant perimeter of the disaccharidase activity around the tumor were determined by a curvimètre so that a quantitative study could be made of enzymologic intestinal metaplasia.
1) The level of disaccharidase activity of the resected stomach of gastric cancer increased in the order of lactase< trehalase < sucrase< maltase in the males but in the order of trehalase < sucrase < lactase < maltase in the females. The area of disaccharidase activity showed a tendency similar to the level of disaccharidase activity. Furthermore, the level of disaccharidase activity was weaker in benign diseases than in gastric cancer.
2) As for the ages, it was observed for the level of trehalase, sucrase and maltase activity to increase gradually from the forties to the sixties, but to decrease from the seventies. Correlation with aging could not be well observed in the females when compared with the males. Lactase did not demonstrate any correlation with aging. Furthermore, in the males the area of trehalase and sucrase activity expanded from the forties to the sixties, but decreased in the seventies. However, there was no tendency for maltase to decrease in area with age.
3) The color discriminant level of Tes-Tape by stomach site showed that the color at the small curvature of A, M, C was intensive and a tendency was observed for their activity spread from the small curvature to the all area of the stomach. The presence of intestinal metaplasia originating from the cardia was also suggested.
4) The activity of trehalase, sucrase, and maltase showed a tendency to increase with the development of the cancer and after progressing beyond a given level it turned to decrease on the contrary.
5) Correlation was studied between the level of disaccharidase activity around the cancer foci and histologic type. High level was observed for tub1 in both sexes and tub2 in the males, but low level for tub2 in the females and por in both sexes. Furthermore, there were some cases showing a high value in both muc and sig .
