EFFECTS OF CALORIE OVERLOAD ON PUPPY LIVERS DURING PARENTERAL NUTRITION
Mongorel puppies weighting 1.8 to 2.5 kg were grouped as follows, (A) starved for 24 hours (N = 6) (B) fed freely with dog food (N = 6) (C) fed by Parenteral Nutrition (PN) with standard calorie (135 cal/kg) (N= 5) (D) fed by PN with 200 cal/kg (N= 5) (E) fed by PN with 270 cal/kg (N = 5) PN were performed for one week and histological and chemical analyses of each liver were performed. Results are follows : (1) Remarkable swelling of liver was constant finding in group (D) and (E). (2) The weights of liver were (A) 66.0±7.5 g (B) 82.8±18.5 g (C) 108.3±21.4 g (D) 243.1±27.3 g (E) 247.1±17.8 g. (3) Increases of glycogen content and accompanying water accumulation explained the abnormal increase in liver weight in group (D) and (E). (4) s-GOT, s-GPT, s-Alpase and s-TG after PN rised in (D) and (E). (5) In (D) and (E), TG in liver was increased by 2 times as (B) and (C) . (6) Total Bilirubin values were not changed after PN. These results suggest the possibility of occurence of swelling of liver with glycogen and water accumulation and fatty infiltration of the liver by overload of carbohydrate during clinical PN.
