REFLECTION AND POLICY FOR THE TREATMENT OF THE GASTROINTESTINAL CANCERS FROM THE STANDPOINT OF SOCIAL REHABILITATION "Esophagus"

Abstract: The postoperative conditions of the occupation and living of 77 cases of esophageal carcinoma operated in our department during 31 year period from 1946 to 1976 were examined. The following conclusions were obtained from the inquiry:
1) The improvement of follow-up result of esophageal carcinoma is the most important before discussing the problems of social rehabilitation.
2) Considering on the postoperative period and age, the occupational ratio is better in the cases with longer postoperative period than 3 years and in ages younger than 60 years.
3) Considering on the operation method, the occupational ratio is best in the group with one-stage antethoracic reconstruction, followed by the intraabdominal and intrathoracic reconstruction, and then by the three-stage antethoracic reconstruction.
4) Postoperative complications affect much on the working ability.
5) Taking by mouth is very important psychologically in the postoperative period for the cases of esophageal carcinoma.
6) Postoperative weight gain or imporvement of anemia, may be one of the indices for the state of social rehabilitation.
7) Poor physical recovery is the most common reason for being unable to work, and the postoperative long term care is essential.
