The 1st Department of Surgery, Hyogo College of Medicine

Akihiro Toyosaka,  et al.

12 patients of malignant tumors of the soft tissues in children are reported ; i.e. 7 children of rhabdomyosarcoma, 2 of fibrosarcoma, 1 of hemangiosarcoma, and 2 of malignant hemangiopericytoma.
3 children of rhabdomyosarcoma of group III of clinical staging, who didn't almost undergo adjunctive treatment, were died in early postoperative period. 2 children of rhabdomyosarcoma, who underwent intraarterial infusion chemotherapy, had remarkable regression, but finally died of tumor reccurrence. The other 2 children of rhabdomyosarcoma who underwent extended radical operation, combination chemotherapy, and radiotherapy are alive including a case of total pelvic exenteration for a vaginal botryoid sarcoma.
All 5 children of malignant tumors of soft tissues except rabdomyosarcoma had good prognosis, including 3 congenital tumors. A case of angiosarcoma, who underwent incomplete resection, had complete response by radiotherapy.
Recent advances of the therapy of rhabdomyosarcoma in childhood in the United States were reviewed. The survival vs. modalities of the treatment was discussed. The coordiuation of surgery, irradiation, and combination chemotheraps (VAC chemotherapy) were emphasized, and its side effects were discussed.
