TREATMENT OF MALIGNANT SOLID TUMORS IN INFANCY AND CHILDHOOD
We experienced 135 cases of malignant solid tumors of infants and children in our institution. 73% of them were with advanced disease and many were already beyond the surgically curable stage, resulting in poor prognosis. Thus, it is hoped that adjunctive chemotherapy and radiotherapy including immunotherapy will possibly make better their prognoses.
1) In neuroblastoma, from the aspects of specific and nonspecific cell-mediated immune functions, discussions were made regarding immune status of the patients, effects of surgery, radiotherapy, and chemotherapy on the immune functions and clinical and immunological effects of immunotherapy.
2) In a case with unresectable hepatoblastoma (Stage IV), we performed complete dearterialization of the liver followed by chemotherapy, radiotherapy and immunotherapy and noticed shrinkage of the tumor mass, improvement of the symptoms and prolongation of the survival time.
3) In a case with rhabdomyosarcoma (Group IV according to IRS), we did chemotherapy, radiotherapy and four times of surgery and the patient is now surviving after 5 years of the commencement of the therapy.
