TREATMENT OF CONGENITAL HYDROCEPHALUS AND ITS ALLIED PATHOLOGY

Department of Neurosurgery, Kyoto University Medical School, Kyoto

Koreaki Mori, M.D.

The purpose of treatment for congenital hydrocephalus and its allied pathology is to release the brain from increased intracranial pressure before it sustains an irreversible change. Prior to treatment for hydrocephalus, it is necessary to evaluate by CT scans whether or not it is treatable, and if so, how is prognosis. Although a shunting operation is a main way of treating congenital hydrocephalus, it is just a beginning of treatment and an optimal effect will be obtained by careful decision of indication for operation, early operation, keeping a shunt functioning and prevention of complications resulting from a shunting operation.
