Report on the annual meeting
SURGICAL TREATMENT OF BUERGER'S DISEASE -LIMITATION OF ARTERIAL RECONSTRUCTIVE SURGERY AND LIMB AMPUTATION
Surgical treatment for Buerger's disease was discussed.
One hundred and forty-five patients with Buerger's disease were treated at Yokohama City University Hospital and Yokohama Kowan Hospital from 1963 to 1977. One hundred and thirty-two were male and thirteen were female. The average age was 35 years old.
Lumbar sympathectomy were elected to 66 cases (male in 60, female in 6). Its average age was 33.9 year-old.
Arterial reconstructive surgery was made in 9 cases. Its results were not so good in long-term follow-up.
Limb amputation was made in 26 cases, because of unhealed ulcer, severe pain and knee joint contraction.
Relatively palliative surgical treatment was recomended as a general rule and radical surgical reconstruction were strictly indicated in our policy, because the Buerger's disease suffered peripheral arteries and was progressive in its patho-physiology.
