In order to obtain less severe toxic reactions and maximal therapeutic effects, 5-FU and MitomycinC have been administered with regional intra-arterial infusion method in 40 patients with hepatoma associated with liver cirrhosis.
A teflon catheter of 1 mm. diameter was inserted into hepatic artery through gastroduodenal artery under laparotomy. 5-FU 250 mg/day was infused with Watkins, chronometric infusion pump for more than 3 months and Mitomycin 6-10 mg was given intermittently every 2-4 weeks with acute one shot injection.
Of the 40 patients so treated 24 showed objective response and partial remission. Responders showed improvement of liver function and decrease of size of tumors' However duration of remission was brief and median survival was only 4.6 months, the longest survival being 25 months. Survival rate at the 6 months was 28% and one year survival rate was 8%.
The results obtained with intra-arterial infusion of 5-FU and Mitomycin on the patients with hepatoma associated with liver cirrhosis was not so much encouraging as on the patients with metastatic liver cancers.
