A STUDY OF VASCULAR RESPONSES FOLLOWING LUMBAR SYMPATHECTOMY

Materials & Methods
Unilateral lumbar sympathectomy was performed in 6 adult mongorel dogs about 3 months prior to the study. As a control, 6 dogs were used, in which 5 dogs were subjected to the study immediately after sympathectomy.
Under the pentobarbital sodium anesthesia, bilateral femoral arteries were exposed, where blood pressure and flow were monitored utilizing electric manometer and flow meter. Norepinephrine (NE) and Epinephrine (E) were administrated via intra-arterial and venous routes before and after a turniquet was applied over the distal hind legs.
The turniquet application was done in an attempt to exclude the pad flow occupying a principal part of cutaneous flow. A comparative study on vascular responses was carried out between the sympathectomized limb and the non-sympathectomized.
Results & Conclusions
1. In the acutely sympathectomized dogs, intraarterial NE administration caused no increase of vasoconstrictive reaction, whereas in its intravenous administration the response was greater in the sympathectomized side than in the non-sympathectomized, as NE concentrations became increased.
2. In the chronically sympathectomized dogs :
a) A greater vasoconstrictive response was seen in the sympathectomized side following inra-arterial and venous NE administration.
b) Vasoconstriction was followed by vasodilation after intraarterial E administration, while vasoconstriction was diminisched after turniquet application. The vasoconstrictive reaction was probably greater in the sympathectomized side. The vasodilatory response increased in the same side with low E concentrations. The vasodilatory response became, however, smaller in that side and greater in the non-sympathectomized, as the E concentrations increased.
