THERAPEUTIC INFLUENCE OF DEHYDROTACHYSTEROL TO THE PATIENTS WITH POSTGASTRECTOMY OSTEOMALACIA

Department of Surgery I, Niigata University School of Medicine

While undertaking the analysis of calcium metabolism and osteomalacia after gastrectomy, we have encounted the opportunity to give dehydrotachysterol for one year to patients with postgastrectomy osteomalacia. Clinical improvements in these patients were apparent with an elevation of serum Ca and P and a decrease of alkaline phosphatase activity into normal limits.
It seems, therefore, necessary to administer Vit. D and K along with digestant preparation especially when postgastrectomy patients show abnormally low serum levels of Ca and P with concurrent elevation of serum alkaline phosphatase activity. A thorough postoperative management by such therapeutic means will certainly prove to be beneficial in forestalling disorder of grave consequence.
