A PATHOLOGICAL STUDY OF ADENOMATOSIS COLI
A pathological study was made on 32 specimens of adenomatosis coli. Five were autopsy cases and the rest were resection cases.
Results :
(1) Adenomatosis coli could be divided into two groups according to polyp density. One type was a carpetted type in which normal mucosa could scarcely be seen. The other was a non-carpetted type. The former type growed 10,000 or more polyps and the latter type growed 5,000 or less polyps. (2) The two groups were also clearly divided according to the histology of the specimen. This was done by calculating the number of the adenomatous part in the length of the specimen. In the carpetted type, it was 3.1/cm or more and in the non-carpetted type, it was 1.8/cm or less. The occuping part of the adenoma in the mucosa were 23% or more in the cases of carpetted type and 12.8% or less in the other cases. (3) The two groups were also classified by the family in which the case belonged. (4) The estimated age of a 50% cancer morbidity were 22 years in the carpetted type and 40 years in the other type. (5) The polyp density was low in the caecum and the rectum. (6) More than 80 to 90% of the polyps were 5 mm or less. (7) The rate of malignancy was very low in the polyps less than one centimeter, but it was 52% in the polyps which exceeded two centimeters. (8) Cancer developed according to the area of the large intestine such as sigmoid colon and rectum but not to the distribution of the polyp.
