Institute of Gastroenterology, Tokyo Women's Medical College

Isamu Hirashima

In 219 cases of single submucosal cancer of the stomach treated by gastrectomy in 1968-1975 at Tokyo Women's Medical College, deaths within 5 years after operation were found to have occurred after the following periods of survival ; in 1 year, 6 cases, 2.7% in 1-2 years, 2 cases, 1.0% in 2-3 years 1 case, 0.6% in 3-4 years, 2 cases, 1.5%, and in 4-5 years 4 cases, 3.6%. Analysis was then performed to clarify how the mortality rate above by the survival period is related to the sex, age, diameter of tumor, localization, macroscopic type, macroscopic and histologic degree of lymph node metastasis, venous invasion in the gastric wall, histologic type, and invasion type etc.
