STUDY ON THE DIGESTIVE AND ABSORPTIVE FUNCTION AFTER PANCREATICODUODENECTOMY

2nd Department of Surgery, Chiba University, Faculty of Medicine.

Hiroyuki ABIRU

The digestive ard absorptive function after pancreaticoduodenectomy was examined experimentally and clinically by ratio method of chromic oxide (Cr2 O3) and the following conclusions were obtained.
1) This operative procedure ordinarly brnigs a marked decrease of digestive and absorptive efficiency, in which, impairment of fat fraction is the highest, That of protein comes next. Therefore, resonable mentionings about these nutritional substances are quite necessary for longer survival of the patients. Carbohydrate fraction is indifferent.
2) Recovery of the decreased digestive and absorptive function after this operative procedure usualy prolonged than that ofter another manipulation of the gastrointestinal tracts, such as subtotal or total gastrectomy.
3) Among the representative pancreaticoduodenectomy methodes of whipple, Child and Nakayama, the Nakayama's method showed the most desirable postoperative results. These were mainly due to original reconstructive method of the pancreatic duct, and the biliary system.
4) The decreased digestive and absorptive function after this operative procedure could be overcome by adequate administration of digestive therapeutics.
