Simple upper and lower intestinal obstructions were produced experimentally in dogs and the qualitative and quantitative changes in the intestinal flora were studied. Further, the bacteriological investigations were carried out following the release of the intestinal obstruction and administration of antibiotic agents.
1) In the normal intestine of dogs, the flora was composed of chiefly Escherichia and several other strains of bocteria. Development of intestinal obstruction or the use of antibiotic agents caused a marked change in the intestinal flora.
2) In upper intestinal obstruction, the number of intestinal bacteria at various portions of the intestine increased. The increase in the number of bacteria just above, middle and below the obstructed part was comparatively mild, but became extremely marked suddenly after the release of the obstruction. The variety in the kind of bacteria was also the richest after the release.
3) The administration of antibiotic agents in upper intestinal obstruction decreased the number of intestinal bacteria remarkably, maintained the balance in the flora , and inhibited the marked bacterial multiplication.
4) In lower intestinal obstruction, the number of intestinal bacteria at various portions of the intestine increased moderately, except the marked multiplication just above the obstruction.
The changes in the flora returned to normal rapidly after the release of obstruction.
5) The use of antibiotics in lower intestinal obstruction decreased the number of intestinal bacteria remarkably and maintained the balance in the flora. It suppressed the multiplication of bacteria just above the obstructed part.
6) The changes in the intestinal flora and the pathological conditions of intestinal obstructions seemed to be closely related each other.
7) The administration of antibiotic agents during and after intestinal obstruction caused a marked changes in the intestinal flora.
