After thraco-lumbar sympathectomy on the patients of essential hypertension, and examining 69 cases, before and after operation, of renal function, relation among the change of renal function and renal arteriolar disease, and blood pressure, the following are obtained as the results of the studies.
1. Out of 22 cases in which urine protein is positive before operation, in 9 cases it disappeared. After operation, in those case, blood pressure comes normal or nearly normal, the renal blood is increased, renal arteriolar sclerosis is slight in many cases.
2. Nothing is necessary to be insisted on the change as to urine concentration or rest-nitrogen.
3. The observation after operation, two or three weeks, and one or three years, the followings are the results oftained: In more than half of the case, renal blood flow is increased, glomerular filtration rate, filtration fraction and renal resistance are apparently improved. Also, in this case, the blood pressure is apparently low. The renal arterial sclerosis, in many cases, was slight or at least mild, But in the case in which the renal arteriolar sclerosis is apparent, after operation renal blood flow, glomerular filtration rate, filtration fraction and renal resistance, including blood pressure are not improved.
4. In cases in which before operation renal blood flow is under normal, or the lowest limit of the normal, after the operation renal blood flow is found increased in many cases, and same as to renal clearance, but in cases in which renal blood flow is upper limit of normal or extremely, often the results of the operation is found worse.
5. Minor type of sympathectomy has shown very slight result on renal function
6. The thraco-lumbar sympathectomy has given desirable results on the renal -function in many cases.
