IRON METABOLISM OF PATIENTS WITH CANCER OF THE STOMACH AND GASTRODUODENAL ULCERS REPORT V. LIVER STORAGE IRON
The author made quantitative determination of total non-hemin iron and of ferritin fraction iron of the liver in 38 cases of a total of 570 patients with gastroduodenal disorders treated in the Matsukura Department of Surgery during the three year period (January, 1954-December, 1956). The results obtained may be summarized as follows:
1) Total non-hemin iron and ferritin fraction of the liver are generally low as compared with those of the control group, and this is particularly 80 in patients with marked symptoms of gastric hemorrhage as well as in those with severe systemic manifestations due to the disturbance in pyloric obstruction.
2) However, total non-hemin iron and ferritin fraction iron of the liver show generally high values in those patients with gastroduodenal ulcers with only slight systemic manifestations, either approaching the normal or even higher. On the contrary, in patients with pyloric passage disturbance the values tend usually to be low, specially in those with marked symptoms of gastric hemorrhage. These findings are in good agreement with the state of preoperative iron absorption.
