STUDIES ON EXPERIMENTAL PEPTIC ULCER UNDER UNBALANCED STATUS OF THE AUTONOMIC NERVOUS SYSTEM

Relationship between the autonomic nervous system and formation of peptic ulcer has been studied following the experimental work. The formation of peptic ulcer and gastric acidity was studied after injections of histamine in beeswax, Atophan in olive oil and caffeine in beeswax on experimental dogs which previously prepared with the thoracolumbar sympathectomy and splanchnicectomy. The control animals were, however, prepared with sham-operation or supradiaphragmatic vagotomy.
1) Production of the experimental peptic ulcers in dogs received histamine injections were as follows :
While 4 out of 20 control and 4 out of 11 vagotomized animals produced the ulcers. 15 out of 17 sympathectomized animals revealed production of ulcers which yet showed more severe pathological findings.
2) The dogs received the Atophan injections showed the following result: Peptic ulcers appeared in 6 out of 12 control, but the ulcerous changes were not extensive, 4 out of 10 vagotomized animals produced the ulcers. Twelve out of 13 cases of sympathectomized animals revealed definite formation of ulcers.
No apparent relationship was seen the liver damage and production of ulcers due to Atophan administration.
3) The following result was obtained in the animals received the caffeine injections: There was no ulcerous change seen in either control animals or vagotomized dogs. Five out of 9 sympathectomized dogs showed definite ulcer formation.
4) By the injection of histamine the gastric acidity revealed marked elevation in the control and sympathectomized dogs, however it was not significant in the dogs which prepared vagotomies.
There was no marked change in the gastric acidity in either controI, or vagotomized dogs by injection of Atsphan, or caffeine. Slight elavation of acidity was noted in the sympathectomized dogs.
In summary, those animals which are considered under the unbalanced status of he autonomic nervous system produced by such sympathectomy tend be able to form the peptic ulcer by repeated injectioes of histomine, atophan or caffeine
Such individual may be called in the status of "ULCUS BEREITSCHAFT".
