STUDIES ON THE RENAL FUNCTION OF THE AGED SURGICAL PATIENTS

1) Preoperative renal function was gradually reduced according to the increase of age. Among cases of the same age group, cases with hypertension showed more definitely reduced renal function than the normotensive cases.
2) Reduction of the renal function of the aged might be mainly due to organic changes, such as senile hypertension and arteriosclerosis.
3) Various kinds of renal-function-tests were found to be correlated with each other, although there were considerably differences in sensitivity. So, it was possible to estimate the condition of the kidney by any kind of the function test.
4) In the aged, postoperative reduction of the renal function was more distinctly found than the control younger group. The postoperative definite reduction of renal function in the aged, might be mainly influenced by the existeuce of hypertension, arteriosclerosis etc. and by the change of blood pressure, especially hypotension during surgery.
5) The postoperative definite reduction of the renal function of the aged was discussed by the result of animal experiment, that was studied on the renal function of dogs with experimentally induced hypertension.
6) " Solid materials in urine " being calculated from the amount, specific gravidity of urine, was discussed concerning clinical significance, and was found to be valuable in estimating the renal condition of the aged.
7) It was found to have the correlation between abnormal renal function and abnormal electrocardiographic findings in the aged. Then, the reduction of renal function in the aged could be considered to be due to vascular changes of the organ.
