Ⅱ. IRON METABOLISM IN PATIENTS WITH PORTAL HYPERTENSION

Department of Surgery, Tokyo University School of Medicine (Director: Prof. S. Kimoto)

1) Hypoferremia, decrease of non -hemin iron in the liver and the spleen was observed in patients with portal hypertension (especially Banti's syndrome).
2) Reutilization of iron originated from the transfused blood was not enough and the iron was accumulated in the liver and the spleen.
3) Hypoferremia associated with portal hypertension was due to reduction of per centage of ferritin in the liver and the spleen.
4) There was not disturbance of absorption for reduced iron.
5) Patients with portal hypertension were not simple iron deficiency anemias.
6) Abnormalities of iron metabolism with portal hypertension, especially hypoferremia, was not improved by splenectomy and portacaval shunt etc..
