STUDIES ON IRON METABOLISM IN SURGERY OF THE SPLEEN AND IN SURGERY OF THE PORTAL SYSTEM
Ⅰ. IRON METABOLISM IN DOGS WITH SPLENECTOMY AND WITH PORTACAVAL SHUNT
1) Severe anemia, hypo£erremia, and increase of non-hemin iron in the liver has been observed in dogs with splenectomy. Plasma iron turnover rate was normal but red cell life span shortened.
2) Anemia, hypoferremia, and decrease of non-hemin iron in the liver and the spleen was observed in dogs with portacaval shunt. Plasma iron turnover rate increased and red cell life span shortened.
3) The rate of red cell destruction, as measured by Cr
51, increased in dogs with splenectomy and with portacaval shunt.
4) Though anemia based on destruction of red cell was observed in dogs with splenectomy and with portacaval shunt, the rate of red cell production, as measured by Fe
59, was normal in the former and failed to compensate for increased destruction of red cell with anemia resulting, while it increased in the latter and compensated for increased destruction of red cell with anemia resulting.
