EXPERIMENTAL STUDIES ON AUTOTRANSPLANTATION OF THE THYROID GLAND AND THE CONTINUOUS IMMEDIATE RADIATION THERAPY BY MEANS OF THE TRANSPLANTED THYROID GLAND
1. The thyroid gland of 420 adult male rats was autotransplanted to the Iesser omentum, and its histological changes, I
131 uptake, PBI
131 conversion rate and so forth were investigated.
The result obtained are as follows:
a. The regeneration of the a utografted tissue was in complete for the first week. It started in the second week, was completed within three-six week, and remained unchanged for the following six months. The histological pictures well corresponded with the functional findings .
b. The regeneration of the autograft was much more remarkable in the rats with total thyroidectomy than in those with left thyroideal lobectomy. The remaining right thyroideal tissue of the latter showed a slight hyperfunction.
2. Yoshida sarcoma was transplanted in the abdominal cavity of adult mal rats after the completion of regeneration of the thyroid gland autotransplanted on the lesser omentum. Following the subcutaneous administration of I
131, the effect of radiation therapy for the transplanted sarcoma was studied cytologically and histologically
a. When a large amount of I
131 was given at the same time with the transplantation of sarcoma, survival time prolonged by 115% and complete disappearance of sarcoma took place in 30% of the cases. However, the effect was reduced by half when I
131 had been given several days after the transplantation of sarcoma.
b. No marked effect of radiation therapy was observed after the administrations of a small amount of I
131 every other day.
