AN EXPERIMENTAL STUDY ON THE INFLUENCE OF "ALCOHOL" ON THE GASTRIC MUCOUS MEMBRANE

A morphogenecologically study is made of dog's gastric mucous membrane changes due to the in-take of alcohol such as acute gastritis, inflammatory erosion of various stages, and ulceration.
The results obtained are as follows:
1) The minimum concentration of alcohol responsible for the development of the above changes seem about 20 per cent. The severity of the changes is different according to the concentration and amount of alcohol as well as on the interval and period of in-take.
2) The changes have many chances of a natural recovery. But they are subject to frequent relapses if stimulated by alcohol repeatedly.
3) Etiologically the changes seem attributable to the direct action of alcohol, not to secondary factors developed following alcohol disposal.
The degree of acidity does not seem to constitute a primary cause for the changes.
4) The recovery of artificial damages made on the fundus of the greater curvature and on the pylorus of the lesser curvature is markedly delayed following the in-take of alcohol.
The higher the concentration, the slower the recovery. The recovery is slower on the pylorus than on the fundus.
