COMPARATIVE STUDY OF HOMOLOGOUS AND HETEROLOGOUS ARTERIAL GRAFTS PRESERVED IN ALCOHOL AND SYNTHETIC PROSTHESIS

This study represents the observation of 57 homologous and heterologous arterial grafts preserved in alcohol and synthetic prosthesis (Nylon taffeta) which have been transplanted into the thoracic aorta of healthy and adult dogs.
The results obtained are as follows :
1) The formation of thrombus after aortic grafting into the thoracic aorta were rarely found with the only one exception of partial thrombus.
2) Homologous arterial grafts preserved in alcohol showed some arterial dilatation 200 days later. No formation of aneurysm and no calcification were found. In some cases, rupture of grafts and necrosis and hemorrhage of arterial branches were observed in the relatively early stage.
3) Heterologus arterial grafts preserved in alcohol were very unsatisfactory because of the early rupture and hemorrhage within a few days. A few cases survived for a long term revealed a formation of aneurysm.
4) Synthetic prosthesis (Nylon taffeta) showed excellent function for 442 days. No dilatation or rupture were found. Foreign body reaction around the prosthesis was very slight. Endothelization and vascularization of the prosthesis were also investigated. The fibrous layer around the graft were intimately adherent to the prosthesis, so the endothelization will be originated from the intima of anastomotic side.
5) On the basis of those experimental findings, clinical application of synthetic prosthesis were made upon 2 cases of thoracic and 4 cases of abdominal aneurysms. Moreover, long term follow-up study of transplantation of alcohol preserved homologous and heterologous grafts have been performed on 7 cases of human patients.
