STATISTICAL OBSERVATIONS ON THE TUBERCULOSIS OF LYMPH NODES AND THE EFFECT OF CHEMOTHERAPY, ESPECIALLY OF ORAL INAH THERAPY
1. Clinical Observations : Observations were made on 112 cases of tuberculosis of lymph nodes. Among the lymph nodes involved, 91% were cervical, 5% were axillary and 2% were inguinal glands. Of the 112 cases, 69% were female and 31% were male. The age group of 21-25 years occupied the majority in both sexes. More cases were found in summer than in winter.
2. Results of Treatments : A daily consecutive dose of 4 mg per kg of body weight of INAH was orally administered to 98 cases. Those completely cured were 42%, improved 52%, and no change was noted in 4%. Further, 74% of the completely cured did not show recurrence.
Before and after the INAH administrations, cultivations of tubercle bacilli from the affected lymph nodes were conducted. None of the tubercle bacilli isolated demonstrated fastness to INAH. When INAH was administered for more than 20 weeks, the cultivations for tubercle bacilli became negative.
In parallel with the cultivations, detections of tubercle bacilli by fluorescence method from the histological sections were conducted. Generally, the latter method gave more favorable detection rate.
When observed histopathologically, it was found that healing process was not noted in the cases in which large caseous lesions existed, but remarkable healing process was observed in the cases in which the lesions were still small in size.
