Summary
The proteolytic enzymes will be found to be useful in the management of collections of blood and of wide variety of acute and chronic infection when they are combined with they are combined with sound surgical judgement. Healing is accelerated by removing infection, cellular debris, and necrotic tissues and by permitting the more effective use of the humoral defenses of the host, the immunologic responses of the host, and the antibacterial drugs. The use of the enzymes must be guided by the variants in each patient. Daily critical observation is necessary to permit adjustment in clinical management with the proteolytic enzymes. The use of the proteolytic enzymes in the treatment of collections, of blood, inflammation, and edema is not a substitute for proper surgical treatment.
