EXPERIMENTAL HEMOLYTIC ANEMIA
1) Sever anemia developed in 31 rabbits follwing intravenous injection of 1% egg albumin solution preferably daily. That this anemiais of a hemolytic nature is reasonably assumed by marked reticulocytosis, appearance of spherocyte, increased osmotic fragility, occasional elevation of icterus index and hyperplasia of erythroid cells in bone marrow. In some cases hypoplastic or aplastic changes in bone marrow were observed in spite of hemolytic findings in peripheral blood.
2) Following splenectomy, benefical result were obteined in 10 out of 14 cases, despite uninterrupted injections of albumin. In 4 cases only temporary improvement was observed. This clearly shows that the anemia obtained is due to hypersplenism. The benefical effect of splenectomy was obtained only in 2 of 4 cases in which peripheral anemia and hypoplastic bone marrow coexisted.
3) Splenomegaly was observed in all cases of theses anemic rabbits. Histologically the spleens showed congestion, hemosiderin deposit and reticulum-cell hyperplasia. Fibrosis was slight, but in 2 cases marked fibrosis was observed.
The liver is characterized by the proliferation of fibers from Glison's capsule, which in the advanced stage joins each other and result in a cirrhotic change.
Above findings suggest closely allied etiological relationship between autoimmuno hemolytic anemia and Marbus Banti.
