The purpose of this paper is to survey the frequency and histological details of cell divisions in biopsied liver sections of 33 patients with gastric carcinoma and of 30 control patients with noncancerous gastric diseases.
Concerning mitotic figures of the liver cells, we noticed them in 19 of the carcinoma group and in 7 of the control. Amitotic figures were encountered in almost all the cases of the carcinoma group except in 3, but were noticed only in 10 of the control.
In general, the liver sections of patients with gastric carcinoma indicated more frequent incidence of atypical mitosis and of degenerated or ill shaped nuclei than those of the non-cancer patients.
As to the relationship between the growth of tumor cells of the stomach and the frequency of mitosis of liver cells, we recognized a tendency of conspicuous mitosis of the liver cells in those cases with gastric carcinoma arising on basis of chronic atrophic gastritis, those with numerous metastasis in the lymphnodes and those with numerous mitosis of tumor cells.
