A STUDY ON DISTURBANCE OF INTERMEDIARY AMINO ACID METABOLISM AFTER TOTAL GASTRECTOMY
As a part of a study on th disturbance of intermediary amino acid metabolism occurring after total gastrectomy, the free amino acid contents of urine and "the iodic acid value" of serum in patients subjected to total gastr ctomy were measured, using normal persons as controls, and the furoic acid test was also examined in the same subjects.
The following results were obtained :
1. The free amino acid contents of urine in 4 survivors of total gastrectomy and 5 controls all fed with a diet containing 1.6g/kg of body weight of protein, were estimated. The amount for those subjected to total gastrectomy showed no increasing tendency as compared with that for the controls. Another patient subjected to the same operation was put on a non-restricted diet, and the free amino acid contents of urine was estimated. The result appeared to show that the contents were not increased also inthis patient.
It thus appears that there is no increase in the amount of free amino acid excreted in urine even after total gastrectomy.
2. There was no statistically significant difference to be seen between the controls and total-gastrectomized patients in "the iodic acid value" of serum, as examined before breakfast.
3. The furoic acid test, showed that the excretion of furoylglycine after administration of furoic acid was retarded or decreased in 4 of 5 total-gastrectomized patients.
4. Accordingly it is conceivable that detoxication through the conjugation of amino acid might often be delayed after total gastrectomy, probably because of the disturbance of liver function after total gastrectomy.
