THE EFFECTS OF NITROGEN MUSTARD N-OXIDE(NMO) ON THE MALIGNANT TUMOR
PARTⅠ. AN EXPERIMENTAL STUDY ON THE EFFEETS OF NMO ON YOSHIDA SARCOMA.

Shigeru MIZOTA

It has been heretofore reported by many authors that Nitrogen Mustard (NM) and NMO directly affect and destruct the mitotic chromosome of the malignant tumor cell, disturbing its cell division.
The great number of nuclei of the malignant cells are of resting form, only a few showing mitosis.
The influence of NMO on the resting nucleus remain unknown. In order to study the effect of NMO on the resting nucleus of Yoshida sarcoma cell, the author measures the dimension of its cell body, nucleolus, and followed up changes of their dimensions after the intraperitaneal injection of NMO.
The results are as follows :
1. After the intraperitoneal injection of 1mg, 2mg of NMO the cell body, mucleus and nucleolus of the Yoshida sarcoma cells were smollen markedly, and especially the nucleus showed karyolysis and apparent hypochromatosis of the chromosome.
2. Although in the control group nucleic acid of the nucleus of Yoshida sarcoma cells was stained distinctly (Feulgen's reaction), in NMO-using group it diminisheel and the phosphorus in the ascites aparently increased.
From the facts mentioned above, it was revealed that NMO affects not only the mitoting nucleus, but also resting nucleus and nucleolus.
It shows that NMO affects the nucleic acid metabolism of Yoshida sarcoma cells of all stages as a whole.
