(I) The movements of normal and chronic obstructed small intestinal strips of rabbits were observed by naked eye and intraluminal pressure recording. Simultanously the action current of serosa was recorded using Ag-AgCl non-polarizable electrodes of 40μ, 100μ and 800μ in diameter, R-C amplifier and electro-oscillograph (H type vibrator) manufactured by Yokogawa Co.
The smooth muscle fibres of normal and chronic obstructed intestine were separated in 20% HCl, stained by Haematoxylin-Eosin and their length and width were measured by micrometer.
(II) The movement of normal and chronic obstructed small intestine
(a) In peristaltic movement (peristalsis, pendular movement and segmentation) a spik group preceeds contraction corresponding with peristataltic rhythm. Single contraction corresponds with one spike group and the intensity of movement pararelles with the amplitude, number and frequency of spike discharge.
(b) The peristaltic cycle of normal intestine is 5.43 second, whereas that of chronic obstruction averaged 7.06 second, i.e., the movement was definitely prolonged and strong.
(c) The amplitude of spike in hypertrophic dilated intestine is wider than that of normal intestin.
(d) The smaller the diameter of different electrode, the wider the amplitude of soike in both normal and hypertrophic intestine.
(e) Below 100μ in diameter, the larger the diameter of different electrode, the more the number of spike in both normal and the chronic obstructed intestine.
(III) The smooth muscle fibers of normal and chronic obstructed intestine
(a) It was also proved histologically that the muscle fibers of enlarged intestine as a result of chronic obstruction were hyper-torphic. Namely the length was as much as twice and the width was three times compared to the controll.
(b) Generally when measurement of muscle fibers was used as a criterion, the more hypertrophied the wider the amplitude of spike.
