Surgical Department, First National Tokyo Hospital

Radioactive P was administered through an intestinal tube to gastrectomized patients, peritonitis caused by gastric perforation, and normal controls. Determinations were then performed on circulating blood samples.
In cases, 6 hours after operation absorption was the same as in the control group but those with peritonitis showed a remarkably different curve, demonstrating a very low rate of absorption.
From the above data we have come to the conclusion that when administering nutrition by tube in cases of gastric operations, the feedings should be started 6 hours after operation.
