CAROTID BODY TUMOR

A tumor of the carotid body in a 35-year-old female is described. The tumor is known to have existed for at least five years before surgical treatment was performed in our clinic. Right carotid arteriography was performed preoperatively with 8 cc. of 50% Pyraceton, obtaining a characteristic shadow of the tumor. From the operative findings the neoplastic tissue was found to be closely adherent to the wall of the vessels but the tumor was completely removed. The tumor was firm in consistency, 4 by 3 by 2.5 cm. in size and globular in shape, having a gloove for the carotid vessel.
In an extensive search of the Japanese literatures, the author was able to find only two cases of histologically verified carotid body tumors. According to the foreign literature about 300 cases of the tumors were reported, and preoperative diagnosis was extremely difficult in spite of their many clinical peculiarities. From the histo-pathological viewpoint and intimacy of the great vessels, carotid arteriography is not only the most available diagnostic method of the tumor, but also quite useful for preventing the damage of the vessels during operation.
The great majority of the tumors are both histologically and clinically benign. In view of the high operative mortality it is advisable that they should not be removed in those cases in which resection of the carotid arteries is necessary.
