POSTOPERATIVE PULMONARY COMPLICATIONS
1. The author has performed pre- and postoperative bronchoscopic examinations in 40 cases who received abdominal surgery.
2. The postoperative bronchoscopic view showed redness and swelling of the mucous membrane of the bronchi and increase of secretion in the bronchi, even in the cases whose preoperative views were quite mormal.
3. I have studied the histological changes in the lung of the dogs, in which bronchial occlusion by the cotton-plug had been performed through the bronchoscope.
4. Inflammatory views were seen in the atelectatic portions of the lungs in all cases.
5. In the group which has received penicillin injection the histological changes showed that the grade of inflammation was less than in the non-penicilin group and view of atelectasis was attractive.
6. The most useful treatment for pulmonary complications is to remove the secretion in the bronchi and to administer antibiotics.
