PERIPHERAL CIRCULATORY CHANGES CAUSED BY CALORIC VESTIBULAR STIMULATION

1. A Photoelectric plethysmograph has been used in a study of peripheral circulation during caloric and rotatory vestibular stimulation.
2. In cases of control and general surgery patients, vasoconstriction appeared during a period from the beginning of the stimulation to the time of disappearance of nystagmus. Then vasodilatation continued about 10 minutes. The above mentioned changes could also be seen in cases of general anesthesia. (Normal type)
3. In cases of acoustic tumor, no plethysmographic change could be observed throughout pre-and postoperative periods by stimulation of the affected side, whereas reaction of the normal type could be obtained by stimulation of the contralateral side. (One-sided flat type)
4. In cases of supratentorial and infratentorial (excluding acoustic tumor) intracranial tumors, reaction of the normal type was usually obtained, and the one-sided flat type which was observed in cases of acoustic tumor, could not be seen.
5. In cases of normal control, rotatory stimulation gave almost the same results as caloric stimulation did.
6. These reactions were more pronounced in younger, female and autonomically unstable cases.
7. Because the amplitude of volume pulse wave is naturally influenced to some extent by changes of cardiac output, cardiac effect cannot be neglected. However, these change may chiefly depend on peripheral vasomotor tone.
7. Although it has been generally accepted that a marked change of peripheral circulatory condition is caused by various stimuli, a very particular reaction could also be observed by vestibular stimulation.
