E.E.G. AND SLEEP (THE 2ND REPORT) ELECTROENCEPHALOGRAPHIC STUDY ON TYPES OF THE NATURAL WHOLE NIGHT SLEEP

I. Surgical Department, Tokyo Univesity School of Medicine

According to the reports, such as by Michelson, Endres, von Frey and others, on the sleep type measured by external stimulations (mostly auditory and cutaneus stimuli) of the natural night sleep in normal adults, it has been generally considered that after the first short period of the deepest sleep the rest of the sleep is the continuance of light sleep sway.
However, having determined the depth of sleep by means of the pattern of electroencephalogram recorded through whole night in normal adults, it is proved that although the beginning process including the first deepest period is quite similarly diagrammatized to the adove mentioned reports, this is not always folowed by light sleep sway, but the deepest or nearly this stages are often repeated several times during the whole process of the natural night sleep.
