SPONTANEOUS THROMBOSIS OF THE INTERNAL CAROTID ARTERY

Five cases of spontaneous thrombosis of the internal carotid artery and one case of the common carotid are presented. Thrombosis of the carotid artery is probably much more common than has been thought. Many patients might have been diagnosed as brain tumor or some vague cerebrovascular accidents. The cerebral angiography is indispensable for the diagnosis of this condition.
Cause of the disease is unknown, however, few of the cases, reported as spontaneous occlusion, were more or less verified pathologically. Arteriosclerotic change, condition of thromboendoangiitis, syphilitic change, changes which are observed in cases of pulseless disease, etc. cannot be observed in our series. However, it might be rather close to "endo angiitis obliterans" of v. Winiwarter. Variuos factors might be responsible for this cause.
Therefore, it may be convenient to suppose that this disease also comes within the category of "nodular vasculitis"advocated by Ishikawa et al.
Although the syndrome is usually characterized by hemiparesis, its appearance and progress are varied from case to case.
No effective treatment has been advocated so far, but with the advances of cardiovascular surgery, a better treatment is expected.
