Surgical Department, Tokyo Police Hospital (Chief: Dr. H. Yoshioka)

1) Ten per cent solution of urethane was applied to infected granulation wounds with a large amount of pus. The chief organism of which was coli bacilli. Unfavorable odor of the wounds vanishes within a few days and amount of pus and the number of organisms in it decrease rapidly. The wound surface becomes clear, healthy granulation proliferates and epithelization becomes active. The same favorable results were obtained in all cases. There are no cases of aggravation.
2) Various abscesses (28 cases) are punctured and evacuated and the 10 per ceut solution of urethane is injected into the abscess cavities. In a large number of cases of abscess caused by acute infection, the following results were obtained by this method (single or repeated puncture-injections) : the pus markedly decreases and becomes bloody and serous, the number of organismus in it decreases rapidly, and the abscesses heal with or without induration. The same kind of favorable results were obtained in the treatment of abscess caused by circumscribed, solitary, tuberculous lymphadenitis. It is advisable to use streptomycin in this case. As a conclusion, this method can be strongly recommended for treatment of various kinds of abscesses.
