HISTOLOGICAL STUDIES ON THE EXPERIMENTAL OSTEOMYELITIS
PART III. FORMATION AND ABSORPTION OF CALLUS
Formation, absorption of callus and the effect of penicillin on them in experimental osteomyelitis, which was reported in preceeding parts, were studied.
1. Maternal tissue of external callus is granulation tissue formed outside of the periost of operated part. It transforms into cartilage and then ossifies.
2. In internal callus formation granulation tissue which was formed intramedullarly is he maternal tissue.
3. Internal and external callus formation are remarkable histologically as well as radiologically, in purulent osteomyelitis.
4. Lacunal absorption, involucrumation and sequesteration occur in purulent osteomyelitis. The effects of penicillin are inhibition of callus formation, acceleration in absorption of callus and complete suppression of sequesteration.
5. Origin of the granulation, cartilage and bone tissues is explained monistically by the potencies of emigrated granulocytes. (author's abstract)
