(1) Experiments on homografts preserved in alcohol
In the experiments of 22 dogs, I used 14 grafts preserved in pure alcohol, 7 grats in 70% alcohol, and one graft in 75% alcohol. The result was practically satisfactory in 20 cases while in the remaining 2 cases intense thrombi occurred. These experiments lead me to believe that arterial homografts can be stored safely for more than 8 months and there would be almost no failure. All the transplanted vessels are replced by the host tissues except the elastic tissues of the media and the replacement is completed in about 3 months after inplantaion. The elastic tissures remain at least for one year.
(2) Experiments on heterografts preserved in alcohol
Since devitalized alcohol homografts have proved to be as effectieve as viable ones, it is to be inferred that I may use heterografts as effectively as homografts if I adopt alcohol preservation where I need not take any specific immunological reaction into consideration. Arterial heterografts were obtained from human beings within 2-4 hours after death, were kept in pure or 70% alcohol, and were transplanted into 21 dog vessels. This atempt which is quite an original proved extremely satisfactory. I did not fined any disruption in all cases. Preservation in alcohohl seems to extinguish the immunological conditions.
