CLINICAL STUDIES ON THE PRE-AND POSTOPERATIVE NUTRITION.
Part I. PREOPERATIVE STUDIES
Preoperative States of my series are studied on their caloric intake, nitrogen intake and nitrogen balance in this part. Relationships between these states and water balance, hepatic function and so on are further observed: and from this point of view there are discussed the fundamental problemes of preoperative feeding of surgical patients.
1. In my series, the average nitiogen intake rankes in the neighbourhood of normal requirement, but their utilization rate of protein seems to be lower than normal state because of their poor caloric intake.
2. Undernourishing or hypoproteinism is mostly complicated by inadequate hydration.
3. Preoperative caloric intake is narrowly related with nitrogen intake. In some cases whose caloric intakes are above a certain definite amount (from 25 to 30 Cal/kg), the utilization rate of protein is almost proportional to their protein intake.
4. Administration of testosterone propionate together with high calories and high protein can hasten the economic urtilization of protein and increase the stores of tissue protein and body water. the preoperative use of testosterone and high calories seems to be highly effective in the preparation of undernourished patients.
