STUDIES ON THE COMBINED USE OF UREA AND SULFONAMIDE Ⅲ CLINICAL INVESTIGATIONS,

2nd Surgical Dept., Tokyo Univ., Japan

Fumiyoshi IIDA

As a rusult of clinical studies on the combined use of urea and sulfa drugs, the author has concluded as follows.
(1) By the combined use of sulfathiazole with urea orally, the blood level of the former is lower than it is singly used. However the excreted amount of sulfothiazol in urine is rather diminshed.
(2) Owing to the increased urine output, the sulfathiazole concentration in urine is so reduced that the renal failure from this drug might difinitely be prevented.
(3) As compared with the single use of sulfathiazole, the sulfathiazol content of pus is increased. This might probably be attributed to the rise of permeability of perifocal blood vessels as shown in the previous report about animal experiments. This seems to be one of the most important fact in view of the effectiveness of the urea therapy.
(4) This combined therapy is sometimes followed by some untoward effects such as somnolence, gastric disturbances, and dehydration, but never by liver function impairment.
(5) In the treatmen of inflammatory diseases, the author observed that body temperature of patients fell, a mount of pus reduced, and the inflammation become rapidly localized.
