STUDY ON PERMEABILITY OF THE CEREBROSPINAL MENINGES.

I studied meningeal permeability by the use of 5% sodium fluorescein (Lange's method) and measured "C" (the content of fluorescein in the spinal fluid) and "R" (plasma : spinal fluid ratio).
It is obviously known that ventricles, including chorides, play a important role to the meningeal permeability, but the spinal meninges and their capillaries play also apart at the same time.
In the "normal group" of 55 cases, the highest concentration of "C" was 130 gamma, the lowest 57 gamma and the average content was 81.6 gamma. The highest ration of "R" was 393, the lowest 80, and the average ratio was 136.7. The level of "C" and "R" are constant in cysterna, lumbar portion and ventricles about minutes after fluorescein was injected. In those patient of head trauma "C" and "R" are changeable and "C" shows the lowest content between 2~10 days and increases gradually until it restores itself into the normal range 2 or 3 months afterward. Comparing with the results reported by Takayama on the encephalogram taking in series during its course after the head trauma, my data seems to parallel with his result in the course. The change of "C" which shows no contact relation to symptoms and fluid pressure, shows despite the genuine pathological change of brain.
Pneumoencephalography is expected to give some affective treatment because of increasing, tendency of "C". Concerning the blocking of the sympathetic nerves, the increasing of the permeability after the blocking of stellate ganglion with 1% novocaine occure in a short time and I consider that the effect for treatment does not last long. Generally, "C" enable me sufficiently to know the change of permeability.
